Help with KeyFu
KeyFu is a piano practice app for iPhone and iPad that works with your digital piano or MIDI keyboard. Most questions are answered below.
If yours is not, write to us. It reaches a person, usually the one who built the thing you are asking about.
Step-by-step help for every screen in the app: the KeyFu app manual.
Joining the beta
What do I need to use KeyFu?
You need an iPhone or iPad with iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, and a keyboard that connects by USB or Bluetooth MIDI. Most digital pianos and MIDI keyboards do.
Do I need to read music?
No, there is no sheet music anywhere in KeyFu: chords come as numbers and names, and blocks on a roll show which keys to press.
How do invitations to the beta work?
Join the beta on this site and confirm your email address. Invitations go out by email in small waves.
Your invitation explains how to install the build with Apple’s TestFlight app. During the beta, KeyFu is for adults, 18 and older.
What does it cost after the beta?
KeyFu is free during the beta. Fair pricing at launch — core practice stays free.
Free for everyone: the exercise library and its ready-made routines, any exercise you pick, and one session a week planned for you. Setting your own goals stays free forever.
KeyFu Pro plans the right session every time you sit down and lets you build your own routines. Everyone on the beta list gets a discounted first year.
How does the discounted first year work?
Everyone on the waitlist and in the beta gets a first year of KeyFu Pro at a lower price, paid up front. It then renews at the regular price.
You get a personal code by email, one per account. It works from the start of the open beta until 14 days after launch, while codes last.
Is there an Android or Mac version?
KeyFu is made for iPhone and iPad, and the iPad app also runs on a Mac with Apple silicon. There is no Android version.
Your keyboard
Which keyboards work?
Most digital pianos and MIDI keyboards with USB or Bluetooth MIDI, from 25 to 88 keys. An acoustic piano sends no MIDI, so it does not work on its own.
How do I connect a Bluetooth keyboard?
Tap “Connect a Bluetooth keyboard” in KeyFu, during setup or in Settings › Keyboard & sound, then pick your keyboard. A USB keyboard works the moment you plug it in.
Every note counts over Bluetooth too, and timing gets a little more leeway. For the most precise timing, use a USB cable.
Does my keyboard have enough keys?
KeyFu takes any size from 25 to 88 keys. Tell it the size, and the exercises it picks stay within your keys; one that needs more says so.
My keyboard has octave buttons. Does that work?
Yes, octave buttons work: when you shift an octave, KeyFu offers to move the keys on screen with you, and then follows later shifts on that keyboard.
Does KeyFu listen through the microphone?
No, KeyFu does not listen through the microphone: feedback comes from what your keyboard sends over MIDI, and the app does not record audio.
Practicing with KeyFu
Can I choose what I practice?
Yes: play any exercise from the library, start a ready-made routine, or open Play freely, with no plan and no clock.
Today’s key is the coach’s pick or yours, and each session fits the time you choose. Building your own routines is part of KeyFu Pro.
What happens to my progress?
Your practice history stays on the device you practice on. It is not stored on our server, so it does not move to another device.
Deleting the app deletes it. Your iPhone or iPad backup can keep it, and Export My Data in Settings gives you a copy.
Do I need an account?
Yes, you sign in with Apple at the end of setup: one tap, no password, and no email shared.
Do I need an internet connection?
Not for practice: reading what you play happens on your device, and a practice session never waits for the network.
The coach needs a connection, and so does signing in with Apple at the end of setup. If the coach can’t be reached, practice carries on without him.
When something goes wrong
My keyboard is plugged in but nothing happens.
Check that the keyboard is on and the cable is in at both ends, through an adapter that carries data. Then tap Rescan in Settings › Keyboard & sound.
A Bluetooth keyboard does not turn up by itself: tap “Connect a Bluetooth keyboard” and pick it from the list.
Don’t reinstall KeyFu to fix a connection, because that erases your practice history. If it still doesn’t show, write to us with the keyboard model.
How do I report a problem from the app?
After an exercise, tap “Something felt off?” on the Done card, or “Help & contact” in Settings. Each opens an email with your app version and device already filled in.
How do I export or delete my data?
Both are in Settings › You & account: Export My Data gives you a copy, and Delete Account erases your account and your practice history.
Deleting can’t be undone, and it doesn’t cancel a KeyFu Pro subscription. Cancel that in your App Store settings.
To leave the beta list, use the unsubscribe link in any of our emails. For problem reports and anything else, write to [email protected].
If you are reporting something broken, the model of your keyboard and what you were doing at the time are the two details that save the most back-and-forth.
