Your coach

Talking to the coach: plans, goals, recaps, what it knows, and its limits.

The coach is called KeyFu and speaks in the first person. Open it from the dashboard with Talk to your coach. A small dot on that card means there is a message you haven’t read yet.

On iPad, the coach can stay open in its own pane while you practice. opens and closes it, and gives it the whole window while your exercise keeps running.

The coach’s replies come from AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI. Before anything is sent to them, KeyFu asks once: Allow or Not now. What is sent is your messages to the coach, your practice goals and a summary of your practice, such as skill levels and recent results. Your name and Apple account are not sent.

With Not now, the coach keeps its short built-in lines after a session and practice works the same, but the chat can’t answer. When you send a message, KeyFu asks again. Say yes later and a built-in welcome is rewritten by the coach. You can change your answer anytime in Settings, under Support & legal.

Every coach message in the chat is marked AI. The chat also reminds you that replies are written by AI and can be wrong; tap Privacy policy there to read it in the app.

After a session, the card says AI only when the coach’s AI wrote it, never for a built-in line.

Type into Ask your coach… and send. While you wait, a short line says what is happening, such as Reading your last sessions… or Your coach is writing…. The reply then arrives sentence by sentence.

Stop ends a reply early and keeps what has already been said. You never have to wait on this screen: practice works offline, and the answer will be in the thread when you come back.

The coach works from what the app has recorded, not from watching you play. With each question it gets your recent conversation, recaps of your recent sessions, your measured skills, your goal, your daily practice time, your keyboard size and the key you are practicing in.

When an answer depends on your history, it can look up how particular exercises have gone for you. If something has never been measured, the coach is told so rather than guessing.

Besides answering in words, the coach can build a practice plan, suggest a goal, or suggest a key to practice in. Every exercise in a coach plan comes from the app’s own exercise library.

A suggested goal arrives as a card, A goal to set, with Set this goal. A suggested key arrives as A key to practice in, with a button that makes that key where you are. Nothing changes until you tap.

Ask for something it can’t do, like the pedal, and it says so and gives you one step from your recent practice. Mention pain, and it tells you to stop for today; write that you want to harm yourself, and it points you to free helplines.

Write that you want to harm or kill yourself, and the coach sets the piano aside and points you to free helplines. That also happens when the coach can’t be reached, a limit is reached, or you haven’t allowed AI yet: then the app shows a fixed message, marked Automatic message, not one written by AI. Without your AI permission, the message is not sent anywhere.

The coach is not a crisis service and can miss what you mean. If you’re in danger, call your local emergency number.

A routine card shows where it came from, with a small colored dot: BUILT BY COACH, INSTANT · FROM YOUR DATA when it was put together on the spot from your practice data, or YOUR ROUTINE for one you saved or made. Then come the title and the exercises in order. On a routine KeyFu built, KeyFu says why he picked it.

Why opens the reasons one by one, in the coach’s words; Less folds them away again.

Start plays the plan’s exercises one after another. Edit lets you change the plan, the same as on routine cards on the dashboard and in the library.

Press and hold a plan card for Edit routine, Pin or Unpin, and Delete.

Building and changing your own routines is part of Pro, so on the free plan Edit is blue and opens the Pro page instead. Starting any plan stays open to everyone.

Sometimes you ask for a plan and the coach answers in words only. The thread then says so, with a Try again button that asks for the plan once more. If this week’s built session is already used, the coach names one exercise instead and the thread says when your next built session comes.

After you have practiced in one key for a while, the coach asks whether to stay there. Keep (with the key’s name) stays; You pick again hands the choice of where today starts back to the coach. The card then shows what you decided.

When you finish an exercise session, a recap lands in the coach thread, headed with the name of what you played. When several recaps come from the same day, they fold into one card that says how many exercises you played and, when you repeated one, how many runs. Closed, it names the first few exercises and the coach’s latest sentence. Tap it to open it: each exercise appears once, with what the coach said last about it, and a repeated one is marked ×2, ×3 and so on.

Searching or jumping to a recap opens its day card for you.

A recap can end with an arrow line naming the next thing to work on. The newest one is pinned to the thread as Current focus, with the day it was said. Tap it to jump to that recap. Its note letters follow the key you are in now, and the line names that key.

If a newer recap names nothing new, the last focus stays. After a week without a new one, the pinned focus goes away. When you change your goal, the old focus goes away too, unless the coach names a new one for the new goal.

Once you have practiced a few times in a week, a weekly summary appears in the thread, at most once a week. It is prepared when you open the dashboard.

On the free plan the app writes it from your own practice facts. With Pro, the coach writes it in its own words.

searches your messages, recaps and saved plans. Turn on Plans to see plans only. Tap a result to jump to it; the message glows briefly so you can find it.

After a jump, a small bar lets you step to the previous or next result and shows where you are in the list. Done closes it.

Press and hold any message for Copy or Quote. Quote puts that message into your reply so the coach knows what you are answering.

On a message from the coach, Report this reply sends that message to KeyFu for review, and a short line confirms it. Only the message itself is sent.

Some lines in the thread are the app reporting a fact, such as being signed out, a limit being reached, or no connection. They carry no name or coach mark, so you can always tell them apart from something the coach said.

The coach’s replies are written by AI models from other companies, which costs money, so the coach has limits and the rest of the app does not. The allowance bar in the chat shows how much you have used; tap it, then Limits, to see what is counted.

On the free plan, when the week’s messages are used, the box where you type gives way to a card until Monday; the thread stays readable. All coaching also shares a daily limit. When it is reached, a status line says so, and it resets the next day.

A thin allowance bar tracks your coach messages: with Pro, Coach messages · 72% used this month; on the free plan, 4 of 10 coach messages this week. Tap it to read when the allowance comes back, with a Limits link. While you type, it shrinks to a thin line.

When the free week’s messages are used, a card replaces the box where you type until Monday; More room with the coach opens the Pro page. When Pro’s month is used, the bar turns amber and a card replaces the box. The thread stays readable either way. A notice, closed with Got it, marks most of the month used, and the pause.

The Coaching & limits page explains every limit in full: this month’s or this week’s count, what gets counted, what is never limited, and what happens when you reach a limit. Open it from Settings or from Limits in the chat.

Practicing, your plans, the whole exercise library, your progress and everything already recorded are never limited. You never lose anything you have played.

On the free plan, your recap cards and weekly look-back are put together by the app from what you played. Pro has the coach write them in its own words on the cards that say the most and on every weekly look-back, and gives you a monthly allowance of coach messages instead of a few a week.

When a limit that Pro would lift is reached, See what’s included → opens the Pro page.

A practice session never waits for the coach. If the coach can’t be reached, a question gets a short status line and you can ask again later.

If you asked for a plan, the app builds one straight from your measured practice instead, marked INSTANT · FROM YOUR DATA. It is a real plan you can start at once. The coach needs you to be signed in; practice itself works without an account connection.
