Ear training
Hear a sound, play it back on your keyboard, and learn to tell intervals and chord types apart by ear.
Choosing a set
Section titled “Choosing a set”Train your ear on the dashboard opens the list of ear sets, easiest first. Interval sets ask about the distance between two notes; chord sets ask what kind of chord you heard, such as major or minor. Each card says what is in it.
You answer on your keyboard, so the card is dimmed until one is connected.
Hear it, then play it back
Section titled “Hear it, then play it back”Each item starts with a sound: two notes one after the other for an interval, or a chord played all at once. Then the screen says Play what you heard, and you play it back on your keyboard. The moving ear means an item is under way. Let the sound finish first: keys pressed while it is still playing don’t count.
A reminder lists the answers this set can have. Replay plays the sound again as often as you like.
Any key will do
Section titled “Any key will do”You never have to find the notes the app played. An interval counts by the distance between your lowest and highest note, from any starting key. A chord counts by its kind, from any key and in any order of notes.
Your own keys always sound, so you can try things out before the item starts.
When your answer counts
Section titled “When your answer counts”The answer is judged as soon as you have played as many notes as the sound had. If you stop part-way, nothing is judged yet: the coach reminds you to play the second note, or the rest of the chord. Carry on and the answer counts.
Right or not
Section titled “Right or not”A check mark and “Yes — major 3rd” means you got it; “major 3rd” is the name of that distance, and the set’s reminder lists them all. A cross shows what it was, and what you played. After a miss the right answer plays again once your own notes have died away.
The next item follows by itself. How far through the set you are, and how many you got, shows as you go.
When the set is done
Section titled “When the set is done”At the end, Set complete shows the coach’s words about the set. It shows no percentage. While the coach’s reply is on its way, it says Reviewing your set….
Again plays a fresh set of the same kind. Ask opens a chat with the coach once the reply has arrived. Done goes back to the list. Finished sets count towards your progress.
Leaving part-way
Section titled “Leaving part-way”closes the set at any time. A set you leave before the end is not recorded.
